Flame, Lecrae Sue Katy Perry over “Dark Horse”

If you watch the mainstream media then you will be familiar with Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” The song that was first performed at the 2014 Grammy Awards is already a Billboard hit; getting to No. 1 on the US Charts and on the top ten charts in almost 20 countries.

Now, Ms. Perry is getting sued by Christian Hip Hop artists Flame and Lecrae. Also included in the lawsuit, Capitol Records and Juicy J. According to them, the song is an infringement of the copyright of the musicians in question.

They claim:

“And by any measure, the devoutly religious message of ‘Joyful Noise’ has been irreparably tarnished by its association with the witchcraft, paganism, black magic, and Illuminati imagery evoked by the same music in ‘Dark Horse.’ Indeed, the music video of ‘Dark Horse’ generated widespread accusations of blasphemy and an online petition signed by more than 60,000 demanding removal of an offensive religious image from the video.”

Speaking to Rapzilla earlier, Flame’s DJ Cho’zyn Boy said

“What listeners are hearing is Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ at 66 beats per minute and they’re hearing Flame’s “Joyful Noise” at 76 beats per minute, When they’re separated, they seem a bit different, but when you bring them to the same tempo and you just change her pitch down one octave, they’re identical … When things are that similar, it’s hard to dispute.”

Joyful Noise featuring Lecrae appeared on Flame’s album “Our World: Redeemed,” which was released in 2008. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album and “Joyful Noise” received a 2008 Gospel Music Association Dove Award nomination for the Best Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year.

This is not the first time Dark Horse is in the news. In February, an online petition asked for the  video to be removed from YouTube for portraying a pendant inscribed ‘Allah’ in Arabic script

None of the artistes in question have commented on the issue but let’s be the jury for a second. Are they similar?
